How do they manage?

They count own-goals.

of course own goals count in stats. All leagues count them.

that explains the high goal average. But interms of attraction, Seria Z is a difficult league to enjoy as a causal observer. I rank it up there with watching badmington.

The Jogo Bonito. That is why England has not won a Wc outside of England and will never win another one. The EPL only improved because it opened its doors to ethnic players. Take the Africans, the non-white Euros and the South Americans and all you got left is a ball kicked 60 meters at a time hoping someone will kick it home.

That's a very silly statement. You could say that about the Spanish league,Serie A, or any major league in Europe. They are all full of foreigners. Mexican league also has a fair few foreigners, no?

Since when did Africans play "Jogo Bonito" btw? Most teams from that continent play like thugs, and their results prove it! No African team has ever made it past the quarters, and only two teams have even made it that far.

As an aside, no African team has ever beaten England.

PS: Your beloved Barca only won the CL in 92 and 2006 because of foreign players. The stars in 92 were Koeman (Dutch), Laudrup (Danish) and Stoitchkov (Bulgarian). In 2006 it was Eto'o, Ronaldinho, Messi, Deco, Guily, etc.

BTW: The best spell for the EPL was in the 70s and early 80s, when they (at one stage) won seven CL/EC titles in a period of 8 years. There were very few non-British players in the league at that time.

One more thing.

Palo, why do you have a problem with England? I'm just curious, because I could probably walk around the city centre here for hours before finding anyone who has even the slightest problem with Mexico.

You're trying to create a rivalry that is completely non-existent from our side. You guys have hardly covered yourself in glory in World Cups outside Mexico, so what's the problem?

Mexico had two shots to win at home. Hot weather, high altitude, how much more home field advantage can one have? They have no excuse.

Palo,

I second what everyone else has said about English football. On the Champions League thread you said with reference to English football:

The European balance of power is only a result of foreign players flocking to give life toa horrible league.

What would other European clubs have achieved in recent years without the foreign stars? Would Milan have won back to back European Cups in 89 and 90 without Rijkard, Gullit and Van Basten? Would Real Madrid have been so successful without Zidan? What would Barca have won last season without Ronaldinho, nevermind all the other foreigners? Almost every Italian and Spanish team that does anything of note in Europe does it with foreigners.

In the 70s and 80s English teams won the European Cup and UEFA Cup with players exclusively from the British Isels. Forest, Villa and even Ipswich won the UEFA Cup.

So I don't know where you formed the impression that English clubs need the foreign influx whereas teams from other countries don't! Do explain when you get a minute.

As for Mexico. Well, clearly they under-achieve for some reason. Because for a nation of 100M that love the sport, they should be doing better. I'm sure palo would agree with this too.

The US rivalry, IMVHO, is a blessing in disguise. For far too long Mexico were bossing things in the region and rarely felt pushed to take it out of 2nd gear. And while Mexico still seem to aquit themselves fine (I'm talking about performance) in head-to-head games with the US, the US seem to be running away with 'W's more times than not the last little while. The improvement of the US is forcing Mexico to wake up and take notice.

teams like Mexico, Spain, will pass the 1/4-final stage very soon. (Mexico should have done it in 1998)

We were talking about club football, I asked which league was more effective.

I've no problem with the foreign players in the PL as English players are over priced.

and even though I don't know what it means I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to be called one. I'm just saying...

When I was 12 we played football a lot, sometimes from dawn to sunset and as much as we admired Brazil we loved England too... Back then I've had a friend, we played a lot together. His hair was flaming red. For that reason and because he was such a good fighter, an excellent friend and a guy you could rely on on a pitch, we all called him "Alan Ball".

My friend still lives in Kiev, a prosperous businessman and a good father of three girls. But the real Alan Ball is gone now...and this is an article dedicated to the great generation of simple English lads.

RE: Allan Ball

I read today that his son spoke to him after the Man Utd match yesterday and they were commenting on Scholes' flick pass yesterday. Then in the middle of the night he got the phone call.

From the Guardian:

The Football Association has confirmed England's players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect to Ball during their first game at the new Wembley against Brazil on June 1. Players in Saturday's England Under-16 friendly against Spain will also wear black armbands and observe a minute's silence.

Question

I was looking at extensive footage of the 66 Final and saw that at Wembley the supporters were waving Union Jacks, rather than the St George Cross.

When was the Flag of St George first used, rather than the Union Jack ?

(this is a good question for a guy like Old Vinnie)

Pabs - Bindipper is from a chant sung.

In the Liverpool slums they tip up the dustbin for something to eat, find a dead rat and think it's a treat.

Buzz - It's fun to see the bindippers get their hopes up and then dashed.

Letter to the Guardian:

Alan Ball was my idol as a teenager - and not just because he went to Everton after the World Cup, and not just because he scored twice against Liverpool in his first Merseyside derby! It was because of his attitude, something that sadly few English players can now claim to have (witness the 'attitude' shown in Germany in 2006).
Players like Ferdinand and others should be forced to watch endless videos of Bobby Moore. Ashley Cole and his peers: endless videos of the peerless Ray Wilson; Lampard etc: endless videos of Alan Ball. Attitude. (Oh, and tremendous skill too.)
Bally's passing is sad news for anyone who truly loves football. RIP

they should be embarrased with themselves...

Arsenal are close to signing another Frenchman -- Yoan Gouffran.

I don't know what it is about them, but I've always disliked Arsenal. They didn't do anything to me but I just know I dislike them.

I've always liked West Ham and Chelsea when they had guys like Poyet, Wise, LeSaux, and Zola.

But seriously, regarding the Liverpool fans board, I read one page and gave up. It's full of scousers having wet dreams with their scenariosn of how United will lose to Milan in the most painful fashion. Then of course they will beat Chelsea and win against Milan in Athens.

Scousers! Get a job.

talk about being unlucky. Looks like England had some real quality. All over Poland this day but to no avail. Poland scores completely against the run of play. (but to their credit ended up finishing 3rd in '74)

No doubt who deserves the title now. Chelsea play a brand of football that is dour, sterile and thoroughly outdated. I could understand it if they didn't have much money, but they've spent more in the last 4 years than some clubs have spent in their entire existence.

On a sour note, an earthquake hit the sleepy town of Folkestone last night. I think it did about £10 worth of damage

This is God's way of semi-demolishing crap decrepit seaside towns when the bulldozers fail to do the job
