Seems like Real has really taken over the game here in the second half. A couple of good scoring chances but we can't capitalize... hope this doesn't come back to haunt us.

Postby Campeones on 22 Feb 2005, 17:25

A shot by Del Piero is blocked by Samuel, who tackles the ball with his cleats and... the ball explodes like a dropped watermelon! Incredible!

On the pitch, Real had two pleas for a penalty and Samuel just struck a header to the wood... the second shot to the post we've had

End of the game at the Bernabeu. I think Real deserved more than 1 goal, but we'll take it. It's a bit better than the 2-1 we had going in to Turin last time. Still, hope those 2 posts don't bite us in the ass.

Seems like the result was fair. Losing Nedved early hurt us. It's up in the air in Torino, but Madrid has the edge by protecting it's home field. Shoud be a better game:

Bineaz

Losing Nedned was the best thing that could have happened to juve and their qualification hopes.

See my message on the Italian CL thread.....

He was only risking more and more each minute that he was on the field.

He shouldn't have played. Salgado is out for the second leg, and maybe as much as the season (bad news... Bravo coming on). I heard Nedved is going to be spending some time in the hospital. Will he play in Delle Alpi?

dezz,

Yeah they shouldn't have started him, but since he got hurt they had this date as the time to come back.

I still like our chances. :o

Anyone watching?

So far only Milan is the only road team that hasn't scored. Close matches all around at the half.

United and Milan and reminding the football world of the beauty in a 0-0 draw....Although United are underachieving a bit, it's still been a barn-burner of a half, and I can't help but wonder if I'm really watching the final.

Seedorf has been everywhere, Ronaldo's by far the most dangerous man on the pitch at the moment, Seedorf hit the crossbar, Scholes missed a sitter, Cafu is starting to do damage down the left flank of United....it's a great battle to watch.

I can't help but wonder if Sheva would already have Milan 1-0 up...or if RVN would have done the same for Manchester....

United closed the half strong, but for long stretches of it, Milan controlled comfortably.

Fantastic match....and I didn't even have to leave my livingroom...

Congrats to Milan, better team on the day :| Didn't expect to lose at home to them, but there you go. They're better than I thought they were.

Always next year; we aint winning over there, or even drawing.

Marko,

Don't get your hopes down at all. Milan is sitting good, but it's not beyond reach for Man U, nor unprecedeneted at San Siro.

0-1 is not insurmountable; it's tough... especially mentally. However, I don't think this Man U team has it in them. I really think they lost some of their character and winner's arrogance (in a good way) when they lost Beckham. Still a good team, but not a contender IMO. Also, some of the cornerstones of that team are getting a bit old, I think, aren't they? They needed the home win to have a decent chance of going through this round. As things stand I'd say around 10% are their chances.

Well, I certinly wouldn't rule out United anywhere. Had Scholes buried his sitter early in the first half it's a whole other ball game....I don't think Fergie expected Milan to come out and attack so much in midfield, and to be quite frank, I think he got out-coached. I have no idea why he pulled Ronaldo and inserted RVN when United were going nowhere near the Milan goal. Ronaldo was giving them movement and seeing as Manchester played in a counter-attack for most of this game, his breaks on the ball were hopeful. I think Fergie had no idea what to do and subbed RVN to simply appease his critics....

United made some uncharacteristic bad passes and silly errors...Rooney let the official get in his head, and these are all things that can be adjusted in the return at San Siro.

United will play better - I don't know that Milan can play better as a team than they did today, however Sheva's presence looms large as he can certainly do more damage with the opportunities Crespo was given today.

I expect the second leg to be just as close and fiercely fought as this one. This game was a joy to watch.

Seedorf MOM.....the pundits are trying to put the goat titile on the United keeper, but in his defense, I'd say that Seedorf's shot wasn't contested, and the defenders left him hanging on the rebound (which he should have smothered to begin with).

United lost. They were beat. Milan were the beter side. But not so much better that I'd write of United's chances.

What a midweek for the English clubs!

Arsenal are out of CL completely, unless they demolish Bayern at Highbury (remember 5-1 against Inter last season?)

Chelsea will have a tough time at home, especially since Dorgba is suspended and Robben is injured.

ManU will have to pull out all the firepower they have at San Siro and make sure they don't give Shevchenko any space to get a goal. But, it is likely that Milan will get atleast 1 goal at home, so, ManU will have to score 2. Possible, but very improbable. However, it might just be Rooney's day...

Liverpool, are almost in 1/8 Finals. They would certainly have been had it not been for the late goal... still, they'll have to make sure they score once in Germany... and, Steven Gerrard will be back. Just imagine how powerful we'd have been had we had Cisse fit... or Morientes been eligible... Still a great side though, certainly better than last year! Rafa is great! Hundred times better than Houlier!

He's a good coach, I'm happy for him. Did great things with Valencia. How is his English? Better than Morientes', I hope! Lol... I love Morientes but I don't think he could speak a lick of French with Monaco last year or English with Liverpool.

I think the Inter - Porto match is moved b/c AC Milan are also set to play in Milan. I don't know how they chose to move Inter's match instread of AC Milan's match.

Campi, back to your post - I hear that Benitez speaks pretty decent English.

Yeah, it's because Inter and Milan would have played in the San Siro on the same day (today), but I don't understand why they couldn't just move the Inter match to tomorrow and have 5 games instead of 4?

After all, they are happy to have 3 games today. I don't understand UEFA sometimes. Playing tomorrow is a practical solution which suits all. Why do Inter and Porto have to wait a week?

Great - I get the Chelsea - Barcelona match and by the time the Milan - Man Utd match is set to be shown I've got to be out at a dinner.

The Indian food might have made up for it but having to pay for the damn thing negates that!

I guess it's the match tracker for me.

Barca are up on away goals right now. I went to the same business school as Nick Leeson and Robert Maxwell :P Can see your point though, the pitch probably couldn't handle that.

Gollasso (R)

I go to run an errand at the bank, 0-0 between Chelsea and Barca and return to see a 3-1 scoreline. I then switch over to RAI radio to get the Milan-ManU score and hear that Barca made it 3-2. I will have to see the halftime highlights. Whoa, Chelsea almost made it 4-2, hitting the post. The aggregate is 4-4 as things stand now Advantage Barcelona. Chelsea needs to win by 2. Lyon has a 6-1 aggregate at halftime, beating Werder Bremen 3-1. Chelsea & Barcelona 3-2 at half now. Milan and Manchester at nil-nil.

Wow, what a half. The beauty of aggregates and away goals...a team can go down 3-0 and still be right there in it.

And there's zero controversy on that PK....the defender jumped in the air with his hands towards the ball, and then turned his head away to make it look like it wasn't intentional. Despite what Homer Smythe thinks, that's a PK all the way. Could have been a red.

Milan-ManU is just like last time. Milan in control, slightly more dangerous but no finish up front, with ManU limited to a chance or two.

Just when I thought Milan would have to take off Crespo for sure, he scores on an absolute BEAUTY of a header for a BIG goal in a BIG game. Just a perfectly placed header. Milan should coast now.

Barca is seriously outclassing Chelsea in this half, but Chelsea has had a couple of great chances, and Cech is keeping them in this.

and yup...Collina is the ref.

Damn. No goals in 2 legs of football; we're really not the same team we were 5 years ago.

Full credit to Milan though, they deserved it and I hope they go and win it. Showed a great attitude, superb composure and were impossible for us to break down. No mind games, just football.

Like Campi said a few weeks ago, maybe some of our players are past their best now. Ronaldo and Rooney always give me hope though I just wish we'd actually bothered to win our group, because we'd have played Werder Bremen instead of Milan.

You do have to beat the best teams in the end, however, and we couldn't have beaten Milan and the superb team they have now. They are sportsmen too; no stupid cheating like you usually get in Europe.

As for Chelsea, never thought I'd cheer the home-town team that I loathe (was born around the corner from Stamford Bridge), but well done Chelsea! Thanks for shutting up Barcelona and their asshole media for calling you defensive, and for avenging their team's disgraceful antics in the first leg. Bravo Chelsea. It gives me great pleasure to see Barcelona out, only a personal shame that we have to join them. Cheers to Chelsea!

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I hope Liverpool progress. I was at the Leverkusen game in 2002 and remember their arrogant and misguided fans. Show them how mediocre they really are, please. They've never won a major trophy after all.

They only struggled after being reduced to 10 men, as any team would. I'm sorry to disagree, Juan, but I have sympathy after the way they were treated out there. I don't think it's worth arguing over now though. Both our teams are out and feelings are running high.

We dominated that game before they were reduced to 10 men. I mean well done to Chelsea but I hope they get their asses handed to them in the next round.

Anyway, I guess I can console myself in that we'll run away with the league title now.

hehe, at least you have the league to look forward to. I'm putting all my focus into the FA Cup, a competition I could have cared less about 5 years ago :P

I'm sorry if my comments offended; just a bit upset about today's result. Expected more and didn't get it. I'd like to see us play more like we did against you in those great 3-3 matches in 98-99 :P They were wonderful games, but it doesn't happen now. Without firepower we won't beat teams like Milan..

Oh well, success isn't given on a plate; couldn't expect it to last forever. This is my 100th post on World Forums and I'm still a "rookie". Don't I get some sort of recognition??
