Del Piero puts in a screamer from 35 yards out. Juve defeat Zenit 1-0.

Fiorentina blow a 2-goal halftime lead and draw 2-2.

Holders Manchester United held to a scoreless tie at home with Villareal. Same scoreline between Celtic and Aalborg.

Porto 3-1 over Fernabache. Real Madrid shutout out Bate 2-0. Dyanamo Kiev and Arsenal 1-1 while Bayern Munich defeats Steaua Bucharest 1-0.

What I like about Manchester United are Berbatov's half-volleys.

What I dislike about Manchester United is that for the ESPN dimwits football begins with it and ends with Liverpool. No other club exists in Europe. Here is for you, Tommy Smyth:

Intersting result in London. Arsenal crash Porto 4-0. It must have been a far different Arsenal than the one that came to Kyiv two weeks ago...

My God ! How pathetic was Barca yesterday. No ideas, no spirit team, no nothing. Saved by the bell though. First they scored after Shaktar kicked out the ball out of the field after injury of one of their players (and total blunder from Ukrainian goalkeeper). And Barca just continued playing - very unfair. And second goal after Srna forgot that Messi is just beside him. I'm afraid that Pepe doesn't know a shit about how to lead the match. I predict he's history after January 1st...

and can we all agree that Messi's face looks like a 9th generation outfielder's mitt that was buried in a field half a century ago, dug up by a black lab, and half chewed to pieces until the dog finally lost interest?

So for the final 16 draw, these teams will be in the first pot:

Roma (ITA)
Panathinaikos (GRE)
Barcelona (ESP)
Liverpool (ENG)
Manchester United (ENG)
Bayern (GER)
Porto (POR)
Juventus (ITA)

And the following in the second pot:

Chelsea (ENG)
Internazionale (ITA)
Sporting (POR)
Atlético (ESP)
Villarreal (ESP)
Lyon (FRA)
Arsenal (ENG)
Real Madrid (ESP)

I believe two clubs from the same country will not be drawn against each other and teams from the same group play as well.

Are they seeded?

If they are, I see barcelona drawing a minnow like Real Fake Madrid.

I hope we get Sporting Lisbon.

Then again, a bigger name will raise our game too. Witness our games vs Bate Borisov and then compare that to our games versus RM.

Italy 2 England 1

Nice. I think Juve has what it takes to get by Chelsea. Ranieri has the extra motivation, which won't hurt. It looks like Giuseppe Rossi will continue to acquire CL expereince; good for him and Villareal but really for the Azzurri.

The Iberian Derby presents a flavorful matchup. Lyon/Barcelona is one of the two toughest draws. Great for a neutral.

A glamour match but it should be easy going for Liverpool (lots could happen 'til February, of course). Can Roma get it back together? I still see Arsenal.

Inter has to get through the defending champs; still the team to beat. For the sake of the Serie A race, I hope they do. The two coaches know each other well, which makes this the toughest matchup.
