Thanks to Tivo and ESPN, I've been watching these CL games often enough. As much as I hate to admit it, credit has to be given to the EPL for establishing its
superiority these past 2 seasons. It seems that the speed, power, and high pressure type tactics experienced by the big 4 of the EPL, who can certainly play beyond that, make it a bit easier to handle continental opponents who are not as used to this.
In fact, I think United ultimately edged out Barcelona exactly because they were able to raise their level of grit and and emphasis on defense. For all the possession Barca had, it never looked likely that they would be able to score. True, Eto has been in a bit of a rut and Henry hasn't settled in, but Barca should be able to at least score 1 goal in 2 games against a United team that is also more offensively weighted.
Don't get me wrong, as United are in fact a more ground and ball possession oriented team, as opposed to relying on high pressure defense tactics and unimaginative offense. That's Chelsea's specialty!
Chelsea will be a formidable hurdle for United. Chelsea is motivated and has the psychological advantage of beating United in their last league outing. They certainly are better defensively. However, if United fire on all cylinders, they simply in my opinion are more potent a team. Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo and co are serious offensive weaponry whereas Chelsea will do nothing without the world class, classical striker abilities of Drogba.
Man has Drogba matured and gotten better. He is a dogged and physical fighter who claws and scraps for any advantage, with an assassin's nose for the goal. Liverpool had only 1 defender who had the pace and power to cope with him, that impressive Slovakian chap, but he went off injured.
As for Liverpool, good riddance to a a rubbish system where the whole is unfortunately greater than the sum of the parts.
