Eusebio, what do you mean "mediocre"? A 2-0 victory in Rome is pretty damn good!

Just like Always said: We all have seen ManU playing much better, especially this season. I think that AF just didn't expect such an unambitious Roma without any real idea what to do in offense. I'm pretty sure though, that ManU will play much better at home in front of their crowd, regardless the fact that they are almost in the semis.

Welcome back Eusebio. Be nice to Pabs, he's a solid football commentator.

Thanks for the welcome, Bineaz. I try to drop by now and then. It's not easy, work and stuff. And Slovenian NT is lousy as well, so nothing to comment on NT field.... I enjoy watching CL, especially since there are no Pay-per-View programms, averything free here (long live socialism, )

I see palo and some other familiar faces. Some not so familiar but we'll get along quite well.

And yes, there's Pabs as well...... still alive and kicking... :brickwall:

Makes you wonder. I am watching Liverpool-Arsenal. Liverpool goes up 2-1 with 20 minutes to go, which will put them through the semi's. Can't sit back for 20 minutes but at least play smart. No, let themselves get stretched out and beaten on the counterattack where too many idiots are trying to slide tackle Theo Walcott. So now the 2-2 puts Arsenal through with the aggregate superiority but what do they do. An idiot is trailing a Liverpool player into the penalty area and despite the fact that one of his teammate is facing the guy, he tries to get around the Liverpool player and ends up taking him down. Why? So Gerrard hits the PK and Liverpool is back into the semifinal. Match is in recovery time, still 3-2.

And in the dying seconds, Babel takes a clearance and runs down the field to make it 4-2 Liverpool. At this point, Arsenal had to push all of their players up. An exciting last 5 minutes.

No scouser was taken down. At all. There was no penalty.

It's a sad day for football when a classy team of intelligent footballers loses to Liverpool mediocrities. However, those mediocrities know - and implement - one important thing about this game. If you don't shoot, you don't score. Sadly, Wenger babes never learned that.

Watching Arsenal fans' faces in agony was painful. But that's football.

LIV-ARS

For the most part I agree with Falc. It was a very exciting match. But why? It was not because two teams were playing flawless football, but because two teams made some really, really stupid mistakes. Where was the Liverpool defense? How could the Gunners throw away so many chances? And why oh why did that Gunner defenseman have to make contact with the LIV attacker in the box? That pk call could have went either way. But why give the ref the chance to decide the game?

You have to feel for Arsenal but in the end, as they say, the better team won.

Exactly! Goes back to what Baggio said about the game being too athletic. The idiot could not see his own teammate facing the attacker in the penalty area? I take intelligence over brawn any day of the week.

That was never a penalty. I wonder how much money Liverpool will get for that one decision and how much Arsenal have lost. I am no fan of Arsenal, but they were denied a clear pen in the first leg and then Liverpool get that one last night. I can see why they were upset.

ManUtd vs Roma

When you have a 2-0 aggregate lead you are afforded the luxury of resting players and playing conservative. After a great start in which Utd had many chances to go ahead, roma settled down. Key saves by Doni and excellent tackles by Juan (my MOTM) saved Roma's skin. Roma pretty much had the ball for the entire game but, as in the First Leg, couldn't break ManU down. There probably was contact on Mancini but he made sure to exaggerate the fall. DDR was going for all power and no precision, and that's precisely what he got. A 2-1 score would have made for a great game. Though it was still very enjoyable for me as a neutral. Rodrigo Taddei smells. On his chance, you have to hit those shots first-time. Him waiting for it to settle and wind up a shot cost him. At this level, those passes must be hit first time. Should have started Ludovic Giuly on the right.

Roma played positive, but once again, pedigree triumphs.

Actually, Chelsea did not score. Riise made a bonehead move, diving with his head instead of clearing with his foot to put in an own goal. And it was in the dying seconds of the match. It will make the return leg interesting. I hate going home after a 1-1 match.

Spalletti was not kidding when he said the Manchester United was the most Italian club he has seen all season.

And this is the best that the top side in the EPL can produce?

Very disappointing though Leo. I watched about a half hour of the first half and the last 5 minutes of the second. MU played with 8 deep. If it was an Italian side that did that, we would hear the criticism for 5 years.

I watched the 2nd Half. Commentator was right when he said that 10 years ago ManUtd wouldn't have played so conservatively. But they definitely do know how to position themselves in defence. We saw that in the last tie. For as much as they had the ball, Barca did nothing.

Nor from me. I love beautiful football as much as anyone, but I don't blame any team doing whatever it can for protecting the goal.

Manchester United indeed employed 2 lines 4 players each, defending. Plus, Van Der Sar has been great again. It was up to Barca to prove how fruitless and hopeless such a defensive mindset is. Barca failed.

I have to admit, I was very disappointed with United's approach to the game. Terrible in parts. I'm not used to such a negative display. That being said, we attacked RM in 2003 and for what? To lose 6-5 on aggregate!

But Barcelona didn't do much themselves. How many proper saves did van der Sar have to make? Not many. I don't know why you're complaining anyhow, Palo - you don't even count as a proper Barca fan. Why not stick to Mexican football? Champions League isn't really within your realm, is it? ;)

Falc, I'll take Spalletti's comments as a compliment. We still thrashed his sorry team 7-1 last year ;)

Arcade bore, unlike you, I have watched the last 9 editions of the CL, live on TV. Not to mention that I have ahad access to La Liga since Romario roamed Barcelona. Aren't you in the 51 st state? The MFL is way more exciting than what we saw today, although we do have 2 or 3 teams that play like Manchester United did today. Needless to say, they usually play before half empty stadiums.

I never thought I would seee the day when Rooney and Tevez would be parked inside the box. A shame to any decent football fan. It reminds me of Italia '90 and '94.

I watched the second half and although Barca produced little when it came to dangerous chances, Man U. did nothing. I mean, I couldn't believe it. I was in such disbelief that I had to count the number of Man U. players to see if one had gotten sent off in the first half.

At any rate Palo, re-watch the Azzurri at Italia90 and re-watch the Azzurri at USA94.

There wasn't a side that was more entertaining to watch than the Azzurri at Italia90. As for USA94, watch the elimination matches and then decide if they were playing like Man U. did last night.
But I do wonder why Agnelli ever allowed the appalling late Italo Allodi to be made general manager of Juventus when all Italy knew how he had "run" Solti on behalf of Inter for many years. -Glanville

We had the best chance - the penalty miss. What did Barca do? They were at HOME and the onus was on them to produce the goods! They failed on that score.

BTW: I've watched the CL for far longer than 9 years, Palo, you kinda grow up with football where I'm from, unlike Los Angeles where it's probably more about baseball or basketball. Not confident about the return leg, cos a 1-1 draw puts you through, but we're definitely capable of winning if we play our best.

Also, United have outscored most European teams this year, so some of these comments are a bit over the top.

I don't understand Sir Alex's strategy and I think it will bite him in the ass. To be honest, nil-nil first leg is a terrible result to return home to. It means that you have to win at home as only another scoreless draw will take you into extra time. Any other draw and you are out. What is disappointing about the match yesterday is supposedly, Manchester United is the best side in Europe. Afterall, they lead the top league, right? So what was it with that display of anti-football? Not a good promotion of the EPL or football in general.

I have ben watching and playing football since before you were but a horny thought in your fathers heart.

You forget that the Spanish Language TV is a great broadcaster of football since the old days of SIN Network. Ask the Italians here how they got their football fix before Goal TV, ESPN and RAI. When I say I have watched the CL , I mean watch almost every single game.

I get SKY, which your right wing compadre, Murdch co-owns n Latin America.

Down year for European soccer altogether... no team that really stands out and the level of play is pretty low. Of course that was obvious when Barca made semifinals... Seriously, I saw the games this week and was sorry I did. Liverpool was better than Chelsea, but that isn't saying much. The final play of the game was unforgivable. The cross had little to no danger, and Riise's positioning was terrible. Barca-MU was a snoozapalooza. MU was terrible and even still they could have come away with the win, although I can't say I feel bad for Cristiano. Is there a more unlikable player in the sport?

Anyway, I'm sure it'll be Chelsea-MU in the final, but I haven't seen anything to get excited about. Doesn't bode well for the Eurocup...

Yawn. The onlything down is the second rate liga. The EPL is now the best league in Europe, Serie Z and the Germans and La liga fighting it out for 3rd.

Take your bitterness elsewhere, chump.
The only reason Fake Madrid is on top of La Liga is because it is of the lowest quality in the last 10 years.

Proof of that is that a mediocre team that plays mediocre quality ball is about to win it.
