Today Blatter said that they may go back to a strict U21 Tournament for the Olympics with no overage players. And second, a player cannot go to the Olympics if he has played in a World Cup

This could be a really great tournament but seeing as how clubs are more more reluctant to release players (rightfully so) it seems like some teams are stacked. The idea of an U23 plus 3 overage was a good one though.

I don't mind if they go back to U21

Michael Phelps?

Why can't we just enjoy his accomplishments? Why can't we just admire what he has done? Why is it that all of these superlatives are necessary? Now this debate of whether he is the greatest athlete ever. Who cares. He is a great athlete who dominates his sport. So is there the need to compare him to other athletes of different sports?

Different times. Mark Spits won all those medals without all the special stuff today's athletes get. Also, he did it under the shadow of the Cold War. Phelps is awesome but Spitz was awesome in his era. Plus he swam with a mustache. Also, there was no 50 meter freestyle back then.

Also, keep in mind that he retired quite young. I think he had 2 Olympic games left in him.

Comparing him to Spitz would be fine. And I just watched an interview of Spitz who is a fan of Phelps and supports him breaking his record. It was a great interview. My problem is not with Phelps. I think the guy is remarkable. It is the idiot media that goes overboard to a point where people start hating Phelps because they give him too much attention. Comparing him to Tiger or Jordan or Ali, all great athletes in their respective sports but it is comparing apples to oranges. Just let us enjoy what Phelps is trying to do.

anbody else see th 100M Mens ?

WOW ! This guy knew he won by the 80M mark and stopped using his hands to run, even turned his head to the left.

A pundit up here said that had he kept using his hands, had a tail-wind, an raced at high altitude he could get into the 9.4's

another pundit is Donovan Bailey who is the 96 champion. He said that at 21 years old, Usain Bolt will get only stronger, bigger and faster.

Bineaz, I know what you mean about journalists having to compare one athlete to another. We hd this idiot commentator (Elliot Friedman of the CBC) here that kept bringing up Michael Phelps and asking who should be the King of Games. Then when Usain Bolt made his way to the Media scrum, this fucking idiot actually asked Usain Bolt this question. Completely making a fool of himself. Bolt, for only 21 years old, replied in the best way possible which was that, he has been watching all of Phelps' races and that he is an inspiration for him.

EDIT TO ADD: I knew Tyson Gay was going to be a non-factor. He didn't even make the Final (finishing 4th in his semi). Looking at how the others were racing throughout their heats, Gay stood no chance.

American TV

was the 100M shown LIVE on US TV ?

NBC opts to show the US vs Spain basketball game. Did any other other stations show it ? I know they'll show it tonight on Prime Time but I thought they would have surely interrupted the basketball game for 9.69 seconds.

Jamaica's Usain Bolt ran an electrifying 9.69 seconds in the 100-metre sprint to set a new world record and take Olympic gold at Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing on Saturday night.

Bolt, who turns 22 on Thursday, annihilated the field. Getting off to a decent start, he then exploded ahead and even took time to celebrate with his arms out with several metres left.

The presumed showdown between Bolt and countryman Asafa Powell, who held the world record until a few months ago, did not take place. Powell finished off the podium, fifth place in a time of 9.95.

Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago won silver at 9.89, with Walter Dix of the United States taking bronze. Dix, an NCAA champion just out of school at Florida State, ran 9.91.

Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles was fourth at 9.93.

Canadian Donovan Bailey's long-standing Olympic record fell as a result of the race in front of over 90,000. Bailey of Oakville, Ont., ran to gold in 9.84 at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Bailey symbolically placed an imaginary crown on Bolt's head after the race.

"I never knew how fast I was going," Bolt told CBC Sports. "One aim was just to win and do what I have to do."

Bailey said the sky's the limit for the sprinter, who gave Jamaica its first ever gold in the event.

"He can absolutely run sub 9.6," said Bailey.

"He's doing things no other human being has ever done before," he added.

When asked about his celebration before the finish line, which may have cost him some time, Bolt said he was concerned about winning more than running the fastest possible.

"Better to break it smaller than bigger, I would say," he said. "[Then] you have a next time to break it."

Reigning world champion Tyson Gay of the United States did not take part in final.

Gay finished fifth in his semifinal heat in a time of 10.05 and did not advance. The American ran a wind-aided 9.68 at the U.S. Olympic trials but then suffered a tendon injury in his hamstring.

He was racing competitively in Beijing for the first time since the injury.

"I did my best. I don't have any excuses," Gay said. "I'm pretty upset. When I get back to the village it's probably going to set in."

He refused to blame it on his hamstring though.

"I'm healthy. My leg is a little sore, just from the rounds," Gay said.

Bolt took over the world record from Powell with a 9.72 race in May in New York City.

The other men competing in the final, in order of finish were: Michael Frater of Jamaica, Marc Burns of Trinidad and Tobago, and Darvis Patton of the U.S.

Possible Reason why he pulls up

in the heats, it is completely understandable why he stops after 80 Meters. Beause he was saving himself for the Final. Everybody does it when they have a comfortable lead and all you need is to finish in the top 2 or 3. It's done in swimming too.

But after the race he said that is is good to break records "a little at a time". On another message board people are saying that he is doing this so his appearance fee's stay high.

whereas if he went into the 9.5's today, that record would stand for decades and his appearance fee's would diminish.

either that or he is an ignorant 21 year old kid that has no clue that he is making history.

Football - Mens QuarterFinals

Brazil 2 - Cameroon 0 (AET)
Italy 2 - Belgium 3
Argentina 2 - The Netherlands 1 (AET)
Nigeria 2 - Ivory Coast 0

Semi Finals

Brazil vs Argentina
Belgium vs Nigeria

I'm thinking we're going have a repeat of the 96 Final with Brazil having revenge.

just for the record, Phelps was not entered in the 50M.

It's interesting to note that although swimming has a lot of disciplines, Phelps is in more 200M events, whereas Spitz concentrated on 100M events.

 Shoelace became undone

the following link shows 5 pictures from todays 100M Final. Usain Bolt's left shoelace became un-tied. Either by not tying in down hard enough or by the energy used on his sprint.

Just amazing.

Dumasspabs:

Spits wouldhavewon another medal had there been a 50 meter race. He wassimply the fastests swimmer while Phelps depends more on endurance. Haveyou ever swam a lap? Do you know the diffeence between 200 ad a 50 meter race in terms of effort and speed?

I cannot believe how the media is vilifying Mark Spitz just because he expressed regret at the USOC not inviting him to be in Beijing to watch his record potentially get broken. We're really reaching baboon tabloid levels of depravity, where nobody and nothing are respected anymore. Some fat, unathletic media hacks are making sales by perpetuating gossip that fast cheese burger eating masses only too willing swallow, all at the expense of a man's reputation.

The Olympics are bullshit anyways, with all the steroid, poor officiating, and even disparities in technologies in certain sports tainting any sense of objectivity. I just watch it for the drama, admiring the occasional true athlete who puts heart and soul into winning. There are a few of these, but I'd say they are a minority among athletes.

Why did USOC not invite Spitz? I think he would have been one of the first to enjoy the accomplishments of Phelps. Like he said in his interview, it is time to pass the torch after 36 years.

NBC just showed the 100 meters sprint. Bolt is sick. That was incredible. Too bad that he is too full of himself. Big difference between how he comports himself to Phelps.

Mate

I haven't heard people criticising him for that.

Falc & Mate

the USOC & US Swimming Federation was correct in not inviting him. This would have just been a bigger distraction for Phelps. He was already under an enormous amount already and Spitz's presence could have proved costly. As well, it comes across as presumptuous and arrogant. It would have been disrespectful to Phelps' teammates and opponents. They were correct in avoiding this sideshow.
