I remember having lots of fun following Tevez career at West "Ruim". 15 games without scoring, after that, he warmed bench , and when he wasn´t playing, West Ham got their first victories in the season, heheheh
Fortunately, Man Utd is a rich club,so they can throw money through the window like this, on the other hand, Corinthians is now in Serie B and has a R$ 100 million debt due to the Russia-Iran mafia that brought players as Tevez, Masceranho, oger and Carlos Alberto to the club.

Obviously, it is different at a club like Manchester United, which isn't struggling and has lots of excellent players. In some ways, it is harder to take a top team to the pinnacle than it is to make a poor team a little bit better.

This also explains why Diego Maradona was world class.

Well Diego was Diego but he won crap while at Barca (four years and only a King's Cup to show for it) while at Napoli he won two titles and a UEFA Cup; much better.

Napoli's performance in the European Champion's Cup was crap as well as one was a first round exit while the other was a second round elimination.

As great as Diego was, it goes to show that you need more than just an all time great to win on the biggest of stages.

Thank God for Burruchaga in 1986!

Well, then explain why Napoli was such crap in Europe? And why Barca was nothing during his tenure there?

Tactics aside (3-5-1-1 formation), Argentina86 was a good squad. You may laugh at Burruchaga, who had an excellent World Cup, but what about Brown? Valdano? Although they pale in comaprison to other World Cup winning teams, they were a very good team for Mexico86.

I repeat: Diego was Diego, one of the best of all time but he didn't help Napoli much on the European stage (a period WITHOUT English teams playing in European competition) and Barca only mustered a King's Cup with him.
But I do wonder why Agnelli ever allowed the appalling late Italo Allodi to be made general manager of Juventus when all Italy knew how he had "run" Solti on behalf of Inter for many years. -Glanville

M&M:

WE are referring to Penta's fantasy player, Diego. He's only a Diego by name. he has never quite delivered on his promise of being a great player.

As far as Diego:

He was better than Italy ever can hope to produce. You breed anti-footballers.

Palo - You forget that here in Italy, especially in Napoli, Diego is adored and there are many here in Italy (idiots born in the 1970s) who believe he is the greatest footballer of all time.

Having said that, right. Roby Baggio was anti-football.

Markino

Strictly speaking, I agree with you about Maradona and Napoli in Europe. The point, which you acknowledge, is that he was able to still do extraordinary things with ordinary teams often enough.

Sure, of course football is a team game and one player can only have so much impact the less equal other factors become. This is only too obvious.

But, football still ultimately comes down to the quality of the men on the pitch. The more world class players your have, the greater the odds are of success. When you have truly gifted geniuses like Pele or Maradona, the odds go even higher...especially when other factors are more or less equal...like training, tactics, fitness, coaching, facilities, etc.

So, England can not avoid Croatia!!!! :)

And Ukraine gets to play the third fiddle in that group?

I for one don't think that the Ukraine will be that easy an opponent. My hope is that their attack is toothless enough for us to mass what will be a tenacious defense. I expect Schevchenko to have decline significantly through this qualifying run in terms of form.

Do the Ukrainians have any up and comers in the way of attack?

This really is going to be a challenging and hard fought group. Kazakhstan managed to defeat Serbia in Euro 2008 qualifying. Belarus can occasionally play well at home. Obviously, England is going through some soul searching and will be out to prove a point.

The icing on the cake is that Croatia has an upcoming generation of quality not seen since 1998. We need to perhaps bring in 2 relatively younger defenders to phase out Simic, Simunic, and maybe even Robert Kovac.

This should be interesting.
Cheers, Mate

Shevchenko will still be in his prime during the WC-2010 Qualifications. What that means - no one knows. He is struggling mightily in England, yet, this year alone, he scored against the french, the italians and the Scots. The first two are known for quite inhospitable defenses. Perhaps, he is not used to his best advantage in Chelsea. I have no other explanation.

Up front, Ukraine has him and Voronin. The rest are irrelevant. The only offensive up-and-comer is the former U-21 product, a 19-year-old Hladky from Shakhtar. The lad is scoring abundantly at UPL level and was one of the stars at the UEFA U-21 EC2006 where Ukraine finished second.

In any case, Ukrainian NT is in total disarray right now. It wasn't impressive to start with (the 1996-2000 version was far better than even the WC2006 version). When Husyn and Rebrov left, I feel, UNT's heart left.

I'm counting on this.

England should no prove more formidable with a capable coach. Capello is exactly the type of coach I feared, as if anybody can bring England over Croatia it is him.

I hope Bilic stays on for WC 2010 qualifying.
