Individual Club Threads

Postby Always on 04 Mar 2005, 11:04

I don't think we need an individual thread for each club, all it does is take away from the thread dedicated to a particular league.

If there are no major objections over the next day or two I'll lock/delete the club threads.

Where are you these days Ali?

Who disappeared and made you administrator? Speaking of which I want more POWER--at least I don't spend my days at work looking at porn like the moderator of this forum. :P

Bineaz - Right now I'm back in Chile. Brazil next week (I hope) and I think Houston as from the first week of April.

Truth be told I'm looking for a decent place to re-locate to. It's got to have a warm year around climate, be of a decent size and a good airport.

Oh, and it can't be Miami.

As for power, it says moderator under your name, is that only in certain threads or for the whole forum?

What do you think of the individual club threads? Too much? Not enough? I wasn't planning on arriving and deleting threads, hence the question.

Fine with me, Ali. I only opened the Manchester United thread as a joke because threads were opening all over the place. I don't think we actually need one, considering the minimal number of posts in the entire English football thread anyway.

Ali,

I was moderator of the Calcio and a couple others but with Falc's reorg that doesn't mean much anymore as I don't think there is no moderator below the four main levels. It's not like we are in desperate need of my moderation, but my comment regarding Windy stands. If we're going back to our old style then what of Boye?

I say any --club--threads that have little activity should go by the wayside. I agree it takes away from the national ones.

Warm? How about verdant Southhampton? San Diego has pretty much what you are looking for; lot less headaches than LA. Stay out of Texas. 

Bineaz - We could re-install the original WC board or elect a new one, trouble is there are only about six of us here posting!!

I'm at a loss as to what to do to be honest, however as Red's not here and barring any objection from the rest I'll happily change the status of all three of you to Administrator.

I was in San Diego in January as well as LA and SF. None struck me as places I'd love to live in.

Texas gets too cold in the winter for me I think.

Go for it. Ali, make them administrators. Basically, that was what they were with the old WX system. Seems this system has multiple levels. Might as well bring Bineaz and Boye on board.

OK. Actually I was going to drop Red an e-mail. Maybe he'll be back soon as the prodigal sons are starting to return (e.g., Rah).

San Diego may be a bit laid back but I don't think you can beat the weather in the US other than Hawaii.

I'll let you know when it's safe to visit Chicago. Yesterday about 20 C; later today -5. Gotta love the temparate seasons.

Hey I got a new title -- whoopee--

Don't see any difference. I wonder if you have to edit where it says who the moderators are on the forum index. E.g., in Politics there no longer is a moderator because of the reorg. Same with Religion

Bineaz - The admin function should be on the bottom of the page:

Go to Administration Panel

You should have full moderator functions as before. I don't think that there are individual moderators as before but I could be wrong. Afterall, I play a lawyer on TV, not an IT.

Closing went smoothly. Can't say the same about the move. Got stuff all over the place. My parents place is a mess and although I would crash here every so often, it is a lot wierder living here. Hopefully it will be for a month only.

OK so we clean up all individual club threads, threads like Pele vs Diego and the like.

I'd suggest all the traditional threads, legue threads, general chat etc, get "stickys" and we all agree to try and limit the creation of new threads as far as possible.

Also, regarding the creation of new threads here's an idea from another message board:

If someone creates a thread with regards to an individual match or a thread where a result will probably be posted a (R) should be included in the title.

That way people who plan to watch the game on tape delay can avoid the thread and not run into the result by accident.

Too dictatorial?

Ali - It looks as if sticky and announcement threads get prioritized on the thread order. I think we should limit those to important topics (like we are doing with this current thread) and maybe Chat. The individual threads are placed in order of recency, with the most recent post on top (under the sticky or announcement threads). Same as was on WX. Once we are done with this thread, we can either delete or edit as a normal thread so that it no longer has preference.

I am familiar with mailing lists using (R) to show that a result is posted. Usually, those ML give you an option to view by email or through a web site. I hope we refrain from creating such threads and continue the use of general topics. For instance, there is no need to create a Juve-Real Madrid thread for this week's match. We have 3 places already to discuss such a game. Why create another.

Since you want to be the dictator, will you be the bad guy that deletes the unecessary threads?

Leo - Far from it, all new threads containing *"XXX" will be promoted to the top of the list pronto.

Falc - I think it's inevitable that new threads will be created for big games, I'm not sure it's such a bad thing. For example the Milan - Man Utd game. If you go to the Serie A thread not only will there be comments on that game there will also be baseball, Roma and Juve in-fighting and details how busy the NYC subway was this morning.

Some people might prefer just to read about that game.

*hetro or lesbian before anyone makes that wise crack.

I don't see any administration options anywhere...

Anyway, if it is possible to restrict the ability to post new threads, I think we should do that to revert back to the old system of WX and avoid new threads being created for all sorts of itsy bitsy topics.

Preferably, we should have one thread for each represented country/region or other countries/regions of interest, plus big tournaments (e.g. CL, WC), seasonal threads (e.g. World Player of the Year) and some others based on prior approval (e.g. Real Madrid).

And we should have an archive for obsolete threads, though in the clean-up process I'm not sure all existing threads deserve archiving.

Yeah, I don't see any options either as I did before the reorg.

Less threads better, but we shouldn't be overly rigid.

Agreed. We shouldn't be overly rigid. However, back at WX, we had a general rule that we wouldn't have individual threads for clubs or matches. There was an exception for Real Madrid, and there were exceptions for European Championship and World Cup matches during the tournament finals. But the general rule was no individual threads for clubs or matches. I think we should adopt that rule here as well.

I don't agree with you guys... first of all, I don't really see what the big harm is of having some clubs having threads devoted to them if there are enough fans to warrant them. I mean, maybe it wouldn't be effective to have a board for every team in every league, but if there's demand for a particular thread, who is anyone here to deny the rest from posting there? Second, and this may be particular to the Real thread, the Liga thread has virtually no activity compared to the Real thread. We've lost the other few Spanish fans around here since the move, and it's basically turned into me and Alma talking about Real (I haven't even seen Red around in a while) with the occasional RM fan who wants to discuss something about the team and not so much in particular about la Liga or the Spain NT. Last, after losing so many people since the move and especially since the heyday of our boards way back when, I think it's a little silly to complain about an overabundance of threads. It's not like there is so much activity that people are going to get confused just because there are a few teams with their own threads.

I think people wanted to move here in part because we didn't want to be told what to do or how much we could post by administrators, and that's why I don't like this proposal. It just seems like an unnecessary move to me.

Thanks Campi. I don't really care, and I certainly don't to support de facto censorship. But I'd say that if certain threads stay stagnant then they're just taking up space. It seems of the new threads the club ones are OK because there's a consistent fan for each team.

Personally, we don't need a Juve thread--too much vitriol.

This is not Baskin-Robbins either

The only thing I want to prevent is people starting topics because that is what is on their mind at the moment. If there is enough interest and participants on a particular team thread, fine. If it is just one guy who loves that team and the rest of us do not give a shit, it is not necessary. We have a good number of Juve fans on this forum, yet, we see no need to start our own thread. In fact, not only are there enough Juve fans but also haters. So if there is a justification for a team thread, that is one. But we are happy to discuss Juve and ALL Serie A sides on our Calcio thread. As long as people do not go overboard in adding threads, I have no problem. I think I made my point weeks ago when I added a bunch of threads on the old Calcio category. If a thread has little interest, then it will go. And those who think that bumping will do the trick, it won't.

Another move will only finish the job we started when we agreed to move. I have stayed at WC and so has Raul. This group developed, grew and is now naturally ending. I don't know if we will ever be a group again but I commend your efforts.

Let me kow where you move.

Take care
