World Cup Prediction Tournament

Postby manosanta on 16 May 2006, 11:55

Well, WC is almost around the corner now. All teams have presented their lists, all the cards are on the table. Everybody has been giving their opinions and predictions all over the boards.

Are we going to organize a prediction contest for this thing, or not ?

We could make it as simple or as complicated as the majority wants. I propose a contest that predicts :

1 - The two teams advancing from each group, and in what order

2 - Results for every round of play-offs

3 - The two finalists and the winner

4 - Best player

5 - Striker with the most goals

I don't have time to organize something like this, but I'll certainly participate. I'll kick it off by saying mine :

Winner : Holland

Best player : Some Dutch (I have to do a little more research on this :) )

Best striker : Luca Toni

Holland, huh? Hmmm

mano,

We talked about a tourney on the CLPT thread a couple of weeks ago; it would likley be the same format as last time (similar to yours); we'll get around to it.

Thanks, Bineaz. I haven't been following the CLPT thread.

Well, anyway, the topic is creted, I guess we'll start when some good soul volunteers to take charge of it.

Buzzz,

I think we will predict the standing of all four teams in a group. I'll try to track down some instructions in the next few days.

Here's an idea.

At http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/e/predictor.html they have a predictor spreadsheet. Why don't we each fill one out and send it to two people that we select for this purpose? These spreadsheets include results of every match. We can assign point values for group matches results and at knock-out stages, we can assign point values for the number of teams correctly identified to advance from these stages.

What do you think?

Been a bit busy, but a neutral spreadsheet sounds good to me, although to mix things up we should still predict the group orders (1 thru 4).

Deadline in 21 days!

Oh and my mom just came back from Italy and my aunt (whose US taxes I do) sent me a ricotta salata (which I love), but for whatever reason she sent me a T-shirt too. It's compeletly orange: Yup the Netherlands will win it all.

s players suspension lifted. Fucking crooks. I hope they take it up ther ass the way their woman do!!

or could it be that Mexico fielded a second choice 11, because they had long qualified, and didn't give a rats ass if they lost that game on the road to a team that considered that game the most important in their history ?

why Mexico have against Guatemala that they would want them not to qualify ?

Scared of being a favorite ??? :D :D

C'mon... have some balls !! Dude, once you reach the semis, anything can happen.

Young is good. In fact, I want to change my 36-year-old wife for two 18-yo's.

Plus, it gets boring with everybody going for the mantra "Brasil-Italy-Germany-Argentina". If we don't win it, I hope it'll be Holland. Or the US. Or Mexico. (now I'm really smoking)

mano

are you in LA ? I remember how pissed off you were after 2002 when Mexican radio in LA were joyful at Argentina not advancing to the knockout round (I should say I think it was you)

Do Mexicans really have it in for Argentina ? Even at another message board I read last week, Mexican fans are hoping Argentina fail.

Yeah, they do. They go to the point of supporting England or Germany against us. That really surprised me when I first came into the States.
Because of that animosity, I don't care for them, but I don't wish them ill. I mentioned them in my post just because they have an argentinean coach.

well, I'm probably going to ruffle some feathers here, but from my past experience, Latin Americans with a high indigenous population really play the victim card really well. On one hand they will stick together but, at first chance, will screw each other over. I get the same idiots over here piping in with their crap as well.

A few weeks ago in my Sunday Morning League, this ref who was of Hispanic/Indiginous persuasion, was really giving up the short end of the stick. I couldn't be bothered with it, but about 5 of my teammates wanted to talk to him after the game so he could explain his calls. He told my teammates (again, I wasn't there) that if it was a hispanic team, he wouldn't have made those calls. Completely out-of-the-blue and completely without provocation.

Because of past experience, I will definitely NOT support any hispanic/Latin American teams.
