Well I only caught the highlights of the Sweden game and I thought it was hysterical to say the least.

They had T&T down one man for the entire second half and they couldn't score.
But I do wonder why Agnelli ever allowed the appalling late Italo Allodi to be made general manager of Juventus when all Italy knew how he had "run" Solti on behalf of Inter for many years. -Glanville

The goalie was the man of the match. Still, Allbach should have had more imagination: three chances and he shoots straight at the keeper EACH TIME!!!

I have the WC on 11 channels on Mexican TV. 3 live feeds , 4 camera angles.....live-close up, multicamera and tactical view. one camera tergeting aech team, 2 repeat channels which replay the days games all day long and one "summary"chabnel that allows you to watch about 30 minutes of highlights of each game played that day. I can also choose from Spanish, English and no commentary. ( pitch sound only)

What can I say? Lucky in love, lucky with TV feeds)

I don't have to endure ABC, Univision and that tall idiot or ESPN unless I have to record on my DVR.

Bah, hate on fuckers!

Fuquit wrote:Mate - Have you watched any of La Liga this year? Beckham has been Real Madrids best player for the last two seasons if you speak to those in the know.

For England he was injured and rushed back for Japorea and had a decent not great Euro 04.

In the WCQs he's been great when played in position.

Actually I have, including in the CL, and I saw nothing to justify the hype. Best on player on Real? Fine, he's better than Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Zidane, and Raul, all whom play their hearts out for Real.

You will see how some of Beckham's compatriots play at the WC while he once again FAILS in a big game. Like I said during Euro 2004, Zidane showed him how it's done...freekick and penalty goals to give France victory over England whereas Davie-Boy missed on his turn.

All kidding aside, and I'll eat humble pie if proven differently, Beckham is simply stealing a place from a legitimate footballer. F*** Sven and f*** the media that fuel this farce. England deserve better.

Argh! Not this again, Mate!

You have a real dislike of Beckham and England; I understand that. We all have our favourites (and teams/players we dislike), and I am no exception. Beckham's celebrity status does him no favours at times, but is it so difficult to separate the celebrity from the player? It certainly should not be.

While I don't think he's RM's most "talented" player, he was top in the assists chart in La Liga last season. Talk to RM fans, and I mean genuine RM fans, and I'm pretty certain they'll agree with Ali and me. Some of those players you mention have not had their best year, yet he has done EVERYTHING he can to make them successful. It hasn't worked out that way, but his assists and effort prove that it is NO fault of his own.

His passes and crosses are invariably inch perfect, and there aren't many players in the world I can say that about. Despite his poor performance against Paraguay, it was his free kick that created the only goal of the game. Even when he is playing badly, he can create something.

He is also by no means a loser, as his countless English titles and his CL medal from 1999 prove. He contributed well to that campaign btw, scoring and creating goals against some of Europe's greatest teams. If he's a loser, then his potential replacements in the England team are BIG losers, as they've won next to nothing.

And please don't mention penalties - they are a complete lottery. I've seen some truly GREAT players miss penalties in important matches and don't think any less of them. I'm sure you know the players who I'm referring to.

When a team is knocked out after a penalty shoot-out, of course it feels robbed. Penalty shoot-outs may satisfy ignorant teenagers (who may be new to the sport) as a means to deciding a game, but not football purists. I will always consider a team that is eliminated in such a manner to be unlucky, rather than defeated. After all, Italy went out in 1990 without losing a game, and I still say that's bullshit.

It's a shame, Mate, as we agree on so many things, but I can't let a player that carried England on his own for over a year (2001) be slated like this. Especially when there is no player to replace him. People used to talk about Shaun Wright Phillips, but he's been useless for Chelsea, rarely breaking into their first team. I'm glad he hasn't been brought to the WC.

Mark

You have a real dislike of Beckham and England

Actually it is because I like England so much that I despise Beckham all the more. Trust me, I always root for England every WC and have a soft spot for the heroes from 1966 - 1970, the Bobby Moore's and Bobby Charlton's whom I saw on vintage films as a kid. I know what England can be.

And David Beckham is not it. He is not it!

Every WC I wait with anticipation for an English revival. Well, this time there is a serious talent pool to bring to bear. For all my criticism of Owen and Beckham, I realize the great potential of Gerrard, Lampard, Cole, Ferdinand, and Terry all one the same wavelength. I like to think of them as metaphorical English Knights of the Round Table with shields emblazoned with Lions.

But, who leads this assembley of firepower? None other than a man who wears sarongs and fades for the national team in big games. Fine, I stand corrected regarding his club accomplishments. But does he really inspire confidence and leadership on the NT?

I don't know. But it sure didn't look like it against Paraguay. In fact it never to me seems to be the case.

Anyways, let's not let Beckham get in the way of our mutual cyber-respect. At the very least, you have to know that I am an England fan. I am.
Cheers, Mate

Thank you, Mate. I think we'll have to agree to disagree here. Beckham is certainly no Charlton, but I've never suggested that he is. If he were to be replaced, I'm not sure things would be any better, but maybe that's just me.

I must also add that I don't expect England to win the WC, neither have I ever anticipated such a thing ever since I first watched the broadcasts from Mexico in 86. I wouldn't like to be associated with some English fans who get carried away every four years with their bombastic predictions. I have never been like that, as I hope my posts have proven over the years.

I do apologise for accusing you of disliking England. Perhaps that was paranoia on my part. The mutual respect from my side has not diminished, and a football disagreement would never change that. I've always enjoyed reading your posts, and I think we're on the same wavelength most of the time, whether it be football or politics.

Terry is a great player but he's slow, very slow. He also spends far too much time hanging off the back of the players he's trying to defend. The second a result of the first I imagine.

That may well lead to problems.

Ferdinand is coming back into form having been uninterested for England and Man Utd for quite some time. Previously being dropped from the England team seems to have helped.

Cole seems to be learning what many of us were crying out for from the World Crossing days. To release the ball and not try and do too much. Not the complete player yet but closer than he was as recently as November.

Nothing to say on Gerrard and Lampard, quality players who would get into almost any team.

So, of the 5 mentioned three are yet to prove themselves as being equally worthy of their place as Beckham. They may well be on the way to doing so but as yet haven't.

Beckham has, when needed he's stepped up and aside from what he's already achieved in the game, his last two seasons for Real Madrid and his public image he's a model pro.

Before you mention he didn't step up at the last WC he was coming off an injury and really shouldn't have played.

It's fashionable to say he's no good, fashionable to hate him and fashionable to have so much knowledge you can point out how useless one of the better players in the world today is.

I'm not a huge fan of stats as they never consider the intangibles however:

Without meaning to be insulting I've always had an image of you as a bit of a pocket protector so maybe stats will work.

Gerrard/Beckham/Cole

7. David Beckham

Attempts on Goal/On Target 2/0
Key Passes (Assists for Attempts) 2
Passes/Accurate 41/22
Attacking half passes/Accurate 34/17
Crosses 12
Tackles/Good 1/1
Ball Recoveries 2
Clearances 2
Fouls Conceded 0
Fouled 3

4. Steven Gerrard

Attempts on Goal/On Target 3/0
Key Passes (Assists for Attempts) 0
Passes/Accurate 45/31
Attacking half passes/Accurate 29/16
Crosses 3
Tackles/Good 1/1
Ball Recoveries 1
Clearances 4
Fouls Conceded 1
Fouled 2

11. Joe Cole

Attempts on Goal/On Target 1/1
Key Passes (Assists for Attempts) 1
Passes/Accurate 39/34
Attacking half passes/Accurate 26/21
Crosses 2
Tackles/Good 5/4
Ball Recoveries 0
Clearances 0
Fouls Conceded 3
Fouled 2

Not a great game from any of them but fairly even. Then consider that it was Beckhams cross that created the pressure leading to the goal.

I didn't include Lampard as he was clearly the better player in that particular game.

Soca Warriors set sights on England

Trinidad & Tobago skipper Dwight Yorke
Interview: Sven Goran Eriksson

By Paul Fletcher
BBC Sport in Germany

Yorke says Saturday's result ranks among the finest of his career
The handbook given to journalists at the World Cup states that Trinidad and Tobago have "generated no history".

By holding Sweden to a goalless draw on Saturday, the Soca Warriors have now created memories that will be forever cherished in a small corner of the West Indies.

And Leo Beenhakker's team hope they can create an even bigger shock against England at the Franken-Stadion in Nuremberg on Thursday.

"I would say there is confidence there now," Soca Warriors captain and former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke told BBC Sport.

"We needed a big performance against Sweden and went out and showed a lot of courage.

"I did not know that my players had such fantastic character. That is a game that five years ago we would probably have lost."

We thought we could get something against Sweden - we're not saying we can get something against England

Chris Birchall
The match against England will be particularly significant for Port Vale midfielder Chris Birchall, who was born in Stafford but is eligible to play for Trinidad & Tobago because his mother was born in Port of Spain.

"A lot of our team play in England, so you don't have to tell us how important it is," he told BBC Sport.

"I did not want to get carried away and just look forward to that game."

Yet no one in the Soca Warriors camp is under any illusions that, after holding Sweden despite playing 44 minutes of the second-half with 10 men, life will be easier against England.

Birchall said: "Before the tournament we thought we could get something against Sweden, but we are not saying we are going to go out and get something against England.

"They are a massive force and one of the favourites to win it (the World Cup). They are not really good starters but they come strong game after game."

Both Beenhakker and Yorke said Saturday's result was among their finest moments in football.

I cannot ask any more of my players - I am very proud of them

Leo Beenhakker
Beenhakker coached Holland at the 1990 World Cup and has also managed Saudi Arabia, Ajax, Feyenoord and Real Madrid.

The 63-year-old said: "I think it is a big success, especially when you play the second half with only 10 men.

"I cannot ask any more of my players. I am very proud of them."

Yorke, who was a member of the Manchester United team that won the Treble in 1999, admitted: "This is right among the very best.

"The historical moment with Man Utd was massive, but to captain your country on the world stage, and the point we got, is absolutely fantastic."

If the Soca Warriors were to take something from their match with England, it would top even that.

I think it is a universally accepted truth that we trinis are going to get our collective butts kicked by the English. but if there is any mercy in the football gods, they would allow us one goal! That is all I am asking. Just one goal so for at least a couple of minutes we could show up Mr. Spice & co. :megaphone:

T&T playing outstanding defense 10 minutes in. ENG attempting long range blasts but T&T are snuffing the shots out.

I really think this game's going to be a good one. T&T just need to build confidence as the game goes on.

England look like they're looking around waiting for someone else to step up.

IMO, this is a MUST win for them. They won't beat Sweden unless Sweden bows out before they meet.

4 points going into the last game is shakey ground. They HAVE to be thinking about that before their next 45 minutes.

Suddenly T&T are 45 minutes away from a point, and a lifeline to the next round.
