Might as well close this thread. Serie A has now become the official joke of soccer. Let these bastards suffer. Europe's worst nightmare will come true. There will be an NFL style European league.

Falc, you are one deranged individual. Thank goodeness I really don't interact with you in real life because I would suggest to all that you are one deranged person and I would suggest to those not to communicate with you. Honestly. How the f-u-c-k could anyone believe the shit your write? Moggi is a f-u-c-k-i-n-g crook for Christ's sake and you are so blinded not to see that. Un-f-u-c-k-i-n-g-believable.

It pisses you off. But why? Because there is truth to the statement. Moggi played a big part in the development of Juve which in turn was a big part in the development of gli Azzurri. As for Moggi being a crook, what did he do? Seriously, what did he do? Even the tribunal could not come up with a clear answer. Like Piero stated, there is no due process in Italy. Sad considering the history that country has on the western culture.

As for me being deranged, come on. What the fuck are you talking about? Look how foolishly you look today revelling that Juve has been sent down to Serie B. Let me pass some news to you. Moggi may not be in charge any longer but the new chairman of Juve is pissed and will fight this tooth and nail. So don't think we are going to sit back.

Pabs - Today's hearing made calcio Italiano a joke. And if things stay from today, it will be a boring league. I am not going to waste my time watching Inter play Parma. Who wants to watch that crap? I might actually get to Church on time on Sunday mornings.

Juventus set to appeal
Friday 14 July, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Italian giants Juventus have this evening announced their intention to appeal the decision to demote them to Serie B with a 30-point deduction.

The Old Lady of Italian football were tonight stripped of their last two Scudetti and their Serie A status after the Calciopoli verdicts were finally announced.

Although the club were expecting to find themselves in the Second Division for the first time in their history, they have been shocked by the proposed points penalty.

New Juventus President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli was clearly furious after the news was delivered a little after 9pm local time.

“It’s unheard of,” said the Bianconeri chief. “We were expecting a balanced sentence but evidently we were mistaken.”

Gigli then confirmed that his club would appeal against the sentence before launching a broadside at Fabio Capello, the Coach who left Juve for Real Madrid at the start of this month.

“If Capello wants our players then he will have to pay the market value for them,” warned the official. “He left us in the most delicate of times and we aren’t going to give him any discounts.

“I’ve spoken with a few of our champions and I can concretely hope that a few of them have the desire to stay. After all, we’ll still pay their wages.”

Real are interested in numerous Juventini such as Gianluca Zambrotta, Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson.

Lazio and Fiorentina have also been condemned to the Second Division tonight, decisions which have been met with a similar amount of anger.

Capital chief Claudio Lotito has vowed to fight on in order to clear his club’s name, even if it means going to the European courts.

The Viola have called tonight’s events as “profoundly unjust” before adding: “We will fight with every means in every appropriate forum.”

Milan have survived the drop but have been barred from the Champions League and will start next term with a 15 point deduction.

The Rossoneri have released a statement in which they describe the verdict as an “extraordinary injustice” before adding that they will soon launch an appeal.

Exactly.

Deal with it. Your team was found to be corrupt in the worst way. The punishment issued is the worst in Lega Calcio history. It's even worse than what Milan and Lazio received in 1980. Scream all you want that this was a kangaroo court and Juve doesn't deserve it and the other bull-crap you want to believe. But guess what? You're wrong in your beliefs. Deal with it.

All these years we were right and you were wrong. :)

=============================================

Not only did Juve get relegated to Serie B and given a start of -30 points, but they were also stripped of their titles for 2004/05 and 2005/06.

Bellissimo.

De Santis (Juve's favorite ref as I've also stated) got a 4 1/2 year ban. That's hysterical.

Paparesta (another ref) got a 3 month ban.

Moggi & Giraudo got off easy with a 5 year ban. It should've been a life ban.

Fiorentina fans block railway to protest relegation

ROME, July 17 (Reuters) - Supporters of Italian soccer team Fiorentina blocked one of the country's main railway lines on Monday in protest at last week's sports tribunal verdict relegating the club to Serie B.

A spokesman for the state railway company said around 1,000 fans had marched on to the lines at Campo Di Marte station, Florence's second largest, at around 6:30 pm local time (1630 GMT) causing all trains to be suspended on the main Rome-Milan line.

The sports tribunal ruled on Friday that Juventus, which is based in Turin, Fiorentina from Florence, and Rome's Lazio should be thrown out of the Serie A for attempted match fixing.

AC Milan, the other team involved in Italy's biggest ever sports scandal, was allowed to remain in Serie A but docked 15 points at the start of next season and excluded from European competition.

All the teams have said they will appeal the decision but Fiorentina's fans have appeared particularly incensed.

On Monday a second group of the club's supporters marched to the training ground of the Italian national side at Coverciano, close to Florence, where they pulled down the flag of the Football Federation whose tribunal demoted the club.

Juventus's Pessotto out of danger

ROME, July 17 (Reuters) - Doctors treating Juventus team manager Gianluca Pessotto, who fell from a window last month in an apparent suicide attempt, said on Monday he is now out of danger and has resumed breathing on his own.

"The patient's condition is gradually improving," the doctors said in a statement, adding he would however remain in intensive care for the time being.

The 35-year-old former Juventus defender has been in a Turin hospital since falling 15 metres from a window in the Juventus club headquarters on June 27. He was found clutching a rosary.

Police said they were investigating a suicide attempt. An investigative source said Pessotto was being treated for depression.

Pessotto was not among those facing charges at a sports tribunal into match-fixing charges that have engulfed Juventus and rocked Italian football.

Appeals in Italy's soccer scandal to start on July 22

ROME, July 18 (Reuters) - The four top Italian soccer clubs found guilty in the Serie A match-fixing scandal will begin their appeals on July 22, the president of the appeals court has said.

"The appeals process, following the sentences of the sports tribunal, will start on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. (0700 GMT)," Piero Sandulli told Italian state broadcaster RAI on Tuesday.

Last Friday a sports tribunal ordered Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio to start next season in Italy's second-tier Serie B with points deducted after finding them guilty of conspiring with referees and linesmen to rig matches in the 2004/05 season.

The fourth side, AC Milan, escaped relegation, but were thrown out of European competition and ordered to start their next campaign minus 15 points. All four have announced their intention to appeal.

Sandulli defended the work of the sports tribunal, which prohibited witnesses and video evidence, leading to accusations that it failed to give the accused the means to defend themselves.

"I don't agree with those who argue that during the sports tribunal there were limitations in the defence rights.

"We are in a judicial situation that the clubs accepted and agreed to in the moment they signed up (to be part of the Italian Football Federation)."

The sports tribunal opened on June 29 and delivered its verdicts on July 14.

The appeals process is expected to move much faster but is unlikely to finish by July 25, the deadline set by UEFA for the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to submit the list of teams to compete in next season's European club competitions.

If the process remains incomplete on July 25, the FIGC commissioner Guido Rossi has said that Italy's list to UEFA would reflect the verdicts of the sports tribunal.

In that case, Juventus, Milan and Fiorentina would lose their places in the Champions League making way for AS Roma, Chievo Verona and Palermo.

Palermo in the CL? WOW - FC, GB, GZ to PA.

Cannavaro. IMO he was never in jeopardy of a place in NT side. There was a time, however, where it seemed to most (and I bet you too pram) that Nesta was the better player. Fabio has so much more intangible. He came to the fore and at the best time.

Image

A good depiction of current events. Evoking the words of the first man on the moon to show Juve is leading in the right direction; going backward, then forward, that's noble. No more "Italian Derby" with Inter. Oh well, we'll have the berlusconi cup between Jube and Milbn. ;)

Juve is my side and I see it as a time for sacrifice for the club; with sacrifice comes redemption. Forza Juve...

...and Forza Palermo (in Serie A) and Europa. A CL match at la Favorita. Hmmm.

Who wants to bet? Parma or Palermo finishes higher in the table. (I'm still waiting to collect on the last one.:)

Juventus, other clubs appeal soccer sanctions

By ANDREW ROBERTS, Associated Press Writer
July 18, 2006

MILAN, Italy (AP) -- Juventus is appealing its demotion to Serie B and the loss of two Serie A titles in Italy's match-fixing scandal.

Juventus filed an appeal late Monday, arguing that the sanctions were excessive, club spokesman Roberto Patriarca said Tuesday.

Lazio, Fiorentina and Milan also confirmed Tuesday they will appeal their punishments. The appeals hearing will begin Saturday, the Italian soccer federation said.

An Italian sports tribunal on Friday relegated Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina to the second division. AC Milan escaped demotion but was given a 15-point penalty and banned from European play in the upcoming season.

Juventus was handed a 30-point penalty, Fiorentina 12 points and Lazio seven. The sports tribunal also sanctioned 19 former officials and referees for influencing the outcome of matches.

AC Milan fans protested the punishments Tuesday evening in front of the club's headquarters in Milan. Hundreds of Fiorentina supporters blocked 60 trains carrying 24,000 passengers on Monday, prompting the club to ask fans to behave.

Meanwhile, prosecutor Stefano Palazzi will resubmit his original recommendation for tougher sentencing, the soccer federation confirmed.

Palazzi wants Juventus demoted to Serie C; AC Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio demoted to Serie B with larger points reductions -- three for AC Milan, and 15 each for Lazio and Fiorentina.

Prosecutors in Naples, Rome, Parma and Turin are conducting separate criminal probes into sports fraud, illegal betting and false bookkeeping -- but any indictments could take months.

Bineaz - I swear that I NEVER felt that Nesta was better at any point of Cannavaro's career.

After France98 where Cannavaro HAD THE HIGHEST AVERAGE OF ALL FOOTBALLERS RATED BY GDS IN THEIR PAGELLE (they gave pagelle for all of the games played regardless of the team) I always felt he was the best defender, not only in Serie A, but also in the world.

I beg any of you who have games of the Azzurri from France98 to watch them again. And tell me if Cannavaro has improved since then.

Sure he had the best tournament of his life in this World Cup but, at France98 he was in that same ZONE that we just witnessed for Germany06.

Missing Parmalat suspect found dead

(ANSA) - Milan, July 21 - A veteran Italian financier involved in the Parmalat fraud case was found dead Friday after being abducted two weeks ago and three people were arrested in connection with the case .

The body of Milan financier Gianmario Roveraro, who served on the Parmalat board before its implosion under 15 billion euros of fraudulent debt two and a half years ago, was found about 30 km (20 miles) from the central-northern city of Parma, police said .

Roveraro, 70, went missing in central Milan on July 5 after attending a meeting of Opus Dei, police said .

He was reportedly a leading local light in the influential conservative Catholic group. Police imposed a media black-out on the affair to help investigations .

Roveraro phoned his family recently to ask them to free up a million euros from his various funds .

Two people were arrested in connection with the case in Parma and one outside nearby Modena .

They were identified as Emilio Toscani, 43, a small businessman; Marco Baldi, 50 or so, a factory worker; and Filippo Botteri, 43, a financial consultant .

So far, they have only been charged with kidnapping, police said .

In the Parmalat case, which has come to trial, an indictment had been sought against Roveraro on charges of conspiring in fraudulent bankruptcy .

Roveraro's financial company organised Parmalat's flotation on the Milan stock market in the late 1990s .

He was on Parmalat's board from 1990 to 1998 .

Parmalat was declared bankrupt in December 2003 after it emerged that four billion euros it supposedly held in an offshore Bank of America account did not in fact exist .

The case escalated, eventually leading to Parmalat's collapse into bankruptcy amid debts of some 14.5 billion euros and a fraud scandal which rocked the Italian financial world .

There are two ongoing trials into various aspects of the case, one in Milan and one in Parma .

Parmalat has since been put back on its feet by corporate-turnaround expert Enrico Bondi who, as government-appointed administrator first and later as official CEO, shed the group's non-core activities, cut foreign activities and reduced staff .

This enabled him to successfully bring Parmalat back to the stock market last October .

Butt is it proportional to .....

OK to curse if you're sworn at
Obscene language no crime if it's tit-for-tat says court

(ANSA) - Rome, July 20 - Italy's highest court has ruled it is okay to hurl abuse at someone provided the other side gives as good as it gets .

The Court of Cassation said a woman was entitled to call an acquaintance a "bastard, fool, a cretin and a drug addict" because the insults had been "mutual" .

"There was justification for the crime," said the judges .

Confirming a lower court's acquittal of the woman, they ordered the insulted man who brought the appeal to pay 500 euros in costs .

This was the second case on "mutual insults" to make its way to Italy's supreme court this year .

In March, judges acquitted a woman who called an immigrant co-worker a 'bloody n**ger' .

Upholding an earlier ruling, they said the woman's reaction was justified because the man had "cursed" her family and her insult was an "equivalent" response .

Rulings by Italy's supreme court are a source of endless delight for the national media. While a number of controversial cases have sparked outcry, others are just downright bizarre .

The court's most notorious decision came in a highly publicized 'jeans rape' case of 1999, in which it decided that a woman who removes tight jeans, even under threat, is complicit in rape .

In another divisive ruling, the court said that bottom-patting was okay provided it was a "sudden and isolated act", while just last week it overturned a rape conviction of a youth who continued having sex with his partner, even though she changed her mind halfway through .

Other baffling sentences have included: punishing a Naples city council whistle-blower who revealed his colleagues were using taxpayers' cellphones to call sex lines; giving the thumbs up for paedophiles to take porn photos of minors so long as they didn't sell them; and upholding an adultery rap against a woman who kissed a bus driver because "the time and emotion invested in the relationship betrayed marital trust" .

I speak no Italian at all - but while we're at it - "sensa" or "senza"?

Felix - I got senza right. Just checked it out to make sure.

Gentile is mad. So much for piedi pulitti (clean feet) with Rossi at the helm. This man has no business running the FIGC. He was on the board of Inter and that should be enough to show everyone that he is too inept to be in charge.

Axed Gentile left fuming Saturday 22 July, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Claudio Gentile has hit out at the Italian Football Federation after he was informed that his reign as Under-21 boss is over.

The Juventus great was told on Friday that he would not be offered a new contract and the way he has been disposed of has clearly angered the 1982 World Cup winner.

“[FIGC commissioner Guido] Rossi phone me to tell me that I was no longer a part of the Federation and therefore to consider myself a free agent,” said the legendary stopper.

“I replied by reminding him that he knew about all of the possibilities I’d had recently to find myself a new job, seeing as I had informed them.

“However, they, through Demetrio Albertini, told me to stay calm and that an agreement would be reached after the World Cup…

“I certainly feel betrayed because now I don’t have the chance to go elsewhere, I’m now unemployed.”

The fact that Gentile hasn’t been told why he was axed has made the decision even harder to digest and he’s taken the opportunity to take a swipe at new FIGC official Albertini.

“I wasn’t told why I’ve been let go and this makes it all even more disappointing,” continued the tactician.

“There is also the fact that Albertini wasn’t even the one who told me after our telephone contact previously. He evidently doesn’t have a clear conscience.

“If this is the new regime at the Federation then we are in bad shape, it seems to me that nothing has changed.”

Gentile has confirmed rumours that he’s been offered a directors role at Juventus, but he’s rejected that option.

“For now, that position is of no interest,” he underlined. “I want to continue to be a Coach.”

Gentile joined the Federation’s coaching ranks with the Under-20 side in 1998 and then acted as an assistant for Giovanni Trapattoni with the full side from October 2000.

He was named Under-21 boss in October 2002 and ends his stint with 41 victories, 15 draws and 12 losses from 68 games.

He led the side to the European title in 2004 and won the Bronze Medal at the Sydney Olympics just a few months later.

Contenders to replace him on the Azzurrini bench include Milan assistant Mauro Tassotti – who reportedly isn’t too keen – former Juve stopper Ciro Ferrara and Inter legend Beppe Bergomi.

Juventus hopeful as appeals start

By James Eve

ROME, July 22 (Reuters) - The lawyer representing Juventus at the appeals trial in Italy's match-fixing scandal said on Saturday he was hopeful that the sentence handed down last week by a sports tribunal would be reduced.

Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio -- all from Italy's top Serie A division -- were found guilty of conspiring with referees and linesmen to rig games during the 2004/05 season.

Juventus were stripped of their last two Serie A titles and ordered to start next season in the second division Serie B on minus 30 points.

"I believe there are ample margins for the points penalty to be reduced," said Cesare Zaccone shortly before the appeals trial opened in a conference room at a Rome hotel.

Juventus have been at the centre of the scandal since it began in early May with the publication of intercepted telephone conversations between their then general manager Luciano Moggi and senior Italian Football Federation (FIGC) officials, discussing refereeing appointments during the 2004/05 season.

The club has consistently argued that Moggi was acting independently and without their knowledge.

Asked whether he believed Juventus stood a chance of being reinstated in Serie A, Zaccone seemed less optimistic.

"Let's see. But let's not get our hopes up," he said.

CALL REPEATED

FIGC prosecutor Stefano Palazzi, however, was in no mood to compromise, telling the appeals court that the tribunal had not been tough enough on Juventus and repeating his original call for the club to be sent down to Italy's third division.

Moggi's behaviour, he said, constituted a "series of violations of the principle of fair conduct, which amount to sporting fraud".

Like Juventus, the other three clubs involved have also denied any wrongdoing and are appealing against what they say are the unjust sentences of the tribunal.

Fiorentina and Lazio were sent down to Serie B with points penalties.

Milan avoided relegation, but were thrown out of next season's Champions League and ordered to start their next Serie A campaign on minus 15 points.

Fiorentina owner Diego Della Valle said that he had come to "put things straight."

"We only hope these judges manage to see things clearly because we've done nothing wrong," he said.

Lazio lawyer Vittorio Siniscalchi attacked the tribunal's decision to admit the telephone intercepts as evidence, calling them "invasive" and "unreliable".

The chances of the appeals court rejecting the intercepts are remote, but Lazio were thrown a possible lifeline when the court's president, Piero Sandulli, upheld a request to allow new evidence from referee Daniele Tombolini.

Tombolini officiated in Lazio's 0-0 draw with Brescia in February 2005 - the match on which the tribunal based their guilty verdict.

The appeals court is aiming to deliver its verdicts before the July 25 deadline set by UEFA for the FIGC to submit its list of teams for next season's Champions League and UEFA Cup competitions.

Should the appeals process remain unfinished on July 25, the FIGC commissioner Guido Rossi has said that Italy's list to UEFA would reflect the verdicts of the sports tribunal.

In that case, Juventus, Milan and Fiorentina would lose their places in the Champions League to make way for AS Roma, Chievo Verona and Palermo.

I think I had it at senza before and someone switched it. It is correct now. As for the double consonants in the Italian language, that has always been problematic for me. If I was writing and reading in Italian everyday, then I would do better but since I don't ......
