ATTN: All World Forum Posters

just wanted to talk about a topic that was briefly brought up about a month before the WC started.

with another footballing cycle gone and the absence of any new posters on this board, I think it's time we all migrate to a major forum.

Our numbers from when we first started back on CNNSI have dwindled significantly and because this is not a major football site, it is impossible to get new posters.

I propose we make a move now. Matt Clark, Piero (Uaglio), Windy, Eugene, Raul sometimes, are all posters at http://www.bigsoccer.com Remember that US poster named "superdave" ? He's also a member there.

Are you guys up for going to that site ?

There are some things that I definitely do not like about that site. Main thing is that that site is WAAAAAAAY to big. Forget about being able to read every damn thread over there because it's just impossible. The beauty about our "community" is that we get to learn a lot about the beautiful game in other country's, but because that site is just waaay too big, it's IMPOSSIBLE to read every thread. So we will definitely lose that community feeling we've build here.

I was registered at bigsoccer.com last year and only contributed a few posts before I stopped (actually I think I got banned :)). But in the last few months, I revisited and I've done a bit of lurking.

I'm going to take a little break from the message boards and I am going to re-register at bigsoccer.com in a short time. I'd love it if I saw you guys there as well.

Or is there another board that you guys have in mind ? CNNSI have not re-instated their message boards or else I would suggest just going back there.

I really think now is the best time. This then will truely be our last move.

At any rate, I want you guys to have a look at bigsoccer.com and tell me what you guys think. (but again, if there's another board you have in mind, let us know)

It sucks. Everytime I check it out, I get lost. If we were to move there, what could we do to protect ourselves from trolls and to insure that we did not get lost? One thing about this place is that we do not get a bunch of idiots coming in to look for trouble (of course, we have you for that department  ). Red took the lead the last two times in getting something started. He is not around anymore. I don't have the time, knowledge or desire to start a new forum. So someone will have to take the lead. As for this need for new posters, is it necessary? I prefer quality over quantity.

And another thing Pabs. I just read some posts on Big Soccer. What has made our little community appealing is the international flavor that is brought here. We have posters from all over the world that bring their own cultural experience on this forum. Big Soccer is very American and after reading a few posts, my eyes are  . Read some of the messages there and you will understand why the USA, with all of its resources and big population, will not win the WC in our lifetime. Not sure if that is the right place to go.

Falc, I agree with you, back in the old cnnsi days there were a few trolls, during the WC soccernet had forums up and number of Fu$kwits there were unbelievable. there were a lot trolls just posting crap or one lines like "Brazil are a bunch of smelly bah, bah..." and the Brazilians there, most were band wagoners were just as bad.

Unlike here we are mature, well most of us :) and don't carry on.

When Brazil lost nobody trash us when we were down.

and I congratulated you Italians for winning the WC. I was wasn't looking for a negative comment about "it was a fluke"

We are just football fans that enjoy the game.

I suggest you keep looking. How about one of the Euro rags with forums? I do not want to talk with folks such as Super Dave or any other fucker with a superlative before his name. I have enough crap to deal with in real life. My 30 hour a week job kills me.

I have to be honest in that I wish we had the number of posters that we had at CNN.

I even tried to register at bigsoccer but I never got a confirmation.

This place is fine but I only wish we had more posters.
But I do wonder why Agnelli ever allowed the appalling late Italo Allodi to be made general manager of Juventus when all Italy knew how he had "run" Solti on behalf of Inter for many years. -Glanville

funny enough, I was reading the US forum on Tues night and 'superdave' and another guy you must of pissed off were discussing how American Freddy Adu was. They called him "paper American like palo"

I have to admit I gave out a little laugh.

Brasilian & Falc

OK clearly that place has a shitload of more trolls and trash-talking is a lot more evident. Every board does indeed have moderators, but a lot of stuff is allowed to go unpunished.

I've read a lot of anti-Italy comments. Remember the US was in Italy's group, and as Falc said, that board is US-oriented. Years ago I would have replied to every damn one of those posts, but now I honestly "LAUGH OUT LOUD". They are pissed. They feel dejected and betrayed because they've invested so much time and energy into their posts about their team. Then when they see that they team doesn't win, they go ape-shit. Without exageerating, I let out a smile in the direction of the computer screen because MY team won and theirs didn't :D

I'm also hesitant. I like the niche we have carved out, which has brought a great sense of community with an international feeling. All in all we have a very intelligent bunch here. And the good thing is that some of the old posters did come back at least during the WC (our third together). No reason not to cross paths in a bigger pond. But I like the degree of control we have here (administrator conflict notwithstanding).

Hey, I am a member of the bigsoccer.com board. You know what, aside from FSU part of that community, I very rarely go elsewhere. WC was one such exception, EURO U-21 was another.

I do like the sense of a community we get here.

However, I do appreciate the need to get new users. Little by little we can involve other people by word of mouth on a personal invitation level. We do not need an army of posters (half of which, as you know will be trolls, dumbf.ucks, etc). We have our own quarrels and our own disagreements in both football and the outside life.

I like it here.

I've tipped a couple (by posting the URL on other boards). Of course it must be some amount posters if it's to continue to be attractive for ads and so.

Little by little we can involve other people by word of mouth on a personal invitation level

Little by little...that sounds as if the desire is to be really exclusive. Is that worth to strive for?

We do not need an army of posters (half of which, as you know will be trolls, dumbf.ucks, etc

That sounds like quite arrogant. The dumbfucks perhaps are customers to Dell who has ads on this site. I don't knowthat half of the people I come across in life are dumbfucks. ALL people are to some extent and occasionally.

I don't believe that Eugene is being arrogant here, Lillie. I've seen the level of discussion on various other football boards, and to label the dialogue "moronic" would do genuine morons a terrible injustice.

And even when the posters themselves aren't complete dumbf)cks, the bigger boards are draped in patriotic flame wars to the extent that it isn't worth anyone's time to join the debate if they wish to talk about something other than how great their team/country are, and how sh!t everyone else is.

Yeah there are those everywhere, but I don't think that they are really that many. I've come across some on various sites, mostly I don't think it's that serious though but much of it is in jest. The people at The Junk Drawer (from which I had myself banned) consists of a bunch of which many surely wear their crash helmets on a nearly daily basis but I do not think that they're that obsessive really. I don't know any of them in person but I suspect that much of the flames thrown there is like good natured ribbings.

I'm for moving BUT it has to be a truly better place.

Places where a bunch of idiots post messages of wisdom like "xxxyyyzz SUCKS !" or " croaxicans are gay !" or "britaly is gonna get creamed by Moronicon!" are not welcome. It takes time to develop a community free of idiots. (We still have a few around, but at least they're funny :) )

On the other hand, we need new blood. We're starting to look more and more like a ghost town, where the youth leave and the old people just gather in their geriatric club to play bingo and repeat the same debates over and over. I have never seen any of you, but I feel like I know some of you more than my wife.

One of the reasons I dissapeared for such a long time it's because I have nobody to discuss argentinean or southamerican futbol. Debates of Maradona vs. Pele are kinda overdone by now :) . Palo has turned into a softy, and doesn't even talk futbol any more. Only during the WC I find something in common with the rest of the people here.

I have a suggestion, maybe it's worth checking out : Yahoo groups.
I regularly post at a Yahoo group created speccially for argentinean posters. This group started more than 10 years ago, and it has more than 140 members, with at least 20% of them posting very frequently, and another 20% posting ocassionally. We get a few new members every year, and it has been constantly growing. All the idiots, trolls and riff-raff find the place not adequate for their intentiones and leave pretty soon. And I have learnt more futbol there than I could ever learn by reading the regular sports columns.

One other feature of the group is than it's not limited just to futbol, any sport is welcome. Even baseball and golf are sometimes considered "sports" :)

There may be a Yahoo group out there already functioning, or we could create our own. The drawback is that it doesn't allow the creation of threads; I can see this becoming a problem if there are too many people talking about a subject in which the others are left out (i.e., we could be drowned by italian calcio posts)

Anyway, I thought it could be worth looking into it.

Like at election time?

That's the kind of boards I've left, too serious. These days I don't have the time of making myself an expert on all series and teams, nor do I have that ambition, while it's all good and I enjoy reading various ccomments from those who have that is ok but being a football expert isn't what pays my bills. I watch some and follow some teams (in periods not even that) and wouldn't like a board where all must post with expert quality, what on earths name would I do there, if you can't wander about on other topics as well?

No. But I bet it wouldn't hurt to do a bunch of queries on those engines to the effect of:

Falc World Football

Pabs Football Message board

Bineaz World Football board

Casati World Football

etc. it gets us in the picture at least.

The best way to attract new users and still maintain control would be to set up a site with a domain.

That means purchasing a domain, which isn't expensive but the initial set up would demand a little time.

That way whenever anyone does a search the forum would be offered up.

I don't want to move to a site where we won't "know" each other, but some new members would be welcome.

So, either we try and do it through world of mouth/links or we can set up a site and hope people searching find us.

Google scores sites by the number (and importance) of other sites linking to them. So what we would need is other sites linking to this place.

In all seriousness, I'm probably not up to going to Big Soccer full-time, Pabs. I'm already registered there and can't say I enjoy the place too much.

I do agree that we could use some new blood, however, and obviously this place won't attract too many new posters as things stand. I quite like things the way they are, but we could always do with more people lest things get stale. For me, the quality of personnel here is great; it's simply the quantity of posters that we need to address.

More than anything, I'd like to get rid of the gloryhunters who have no clue about football yet pretend to like it and even live vicariously through a team that they know next to nothing about. Where is Peter Sutcliffe when you need him?

WOW. A lot of people are really against bigsoccer.com

I want to stress something though. While it is true that you get trolls there, for the most part people are on their own boards. Because of the sheer magnitude of that site, I really can't see anybody possibly reading every board. I know for sure that if I join, I'm only going to read Juve and Italy boards. And depending on what's going on (say, the CL) then I'll go over to the CL board when the time is right.

Guys, here are 2 more sites that I want you all to peruse over the next little while...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/messageboards/newguide/subindex_sport.shtml

http://forums.sportsnet.ca/category.jspa?categoryID=34

The first one is by the BBC. I've lurked on this site a few times. Even though it's mainly UK-based posters, their International Board is quite extensive. Like the boards we've been a part of where most posters were US-based, this board is mainly people UK-based. You do have supporters from around the world though (you would have to go to THAT board though)

The second one is a Canadian site. But like the BBC site, it has an extensive International section. Most posters are Canadians supporting EPL sides, but I do know there is a poster from Brazil, among others.

1/4 of the way down the page, you'll see 2 links. One's a "General Soccer Forum" and the other one is "EPL"

At any rate, have a look at these 2 sites over the next little while and tell me what you think.

Pabs

I agree we need new blood. One of the reasons I go to bigsoccer.com is because they have such a diverse set of viewpoints. You get the really dumbasses, but you also have the very good posters.

In the Italian forum for example, they are very knowledgable about our up and coming stars. I've actually learned a lot there.

I love this forum and this group of guys. I think I converse more with you than many of my friends from college and law school. But, we need a fresh infusion of new posters.

I'm all for setting up our own domain and advertising it somewhat, or if we can find an equivalent site to this one with just A BIT more action, that would be good.

maybe I'm doing something wrong but it seems different this time.

Last time I was there, it seemed a bit more organized with different titles for different threads. Now it seems like there's a free-for-all and everything's mized up.
